News from the National Trust regarding maintenance and cleaning work on Corfe Castle Common.
Don’t panic if you see fire or smoke on West Common this week. Weather permitting, a National Trust contractor is carrying out gorse burning from Wednesday 15 Nov to Friday 17 Nov. This helps protect the ecology of the site – the common is an important site for its grassland and wetland which supports a huge diversity of wildlife including southern damselflies, skylarks and several species of orchid. Without management, the gorse will spread, encroaching on these habitats and blocking public access. Burning takes place at this time of the year to minimise the impact on wildlife – while reptiles are hibernating and before birds start nesting.
