Corfe Common Maintenance

News from the National Trust regarding maintenance and cleaning work on Corfe Castle Common.

Between the 3rd and the 7th October, a National Trust contractor will be cutting gorse with an excavator mounted tree saw, raking up the arisings and burning them on Corfe Common.

The burning will only take place if there is no risk of smoke blowing towards the road or neighbouring residential properties. The work will take place on both Little East Common (between the A351 Valley Road and the railway line) and, if time allows, West Common (west of the B3069).

The gorse is being cut to allow grazing animals to move freely on the common, to restore open acid grassland and to prevent further scrub encroachment into open habitats. The scrub is a valuable habitat for birds, reptiles and other species, but it needs to be managed to maintain its condition and the surrounding species rich open habitats.

This contract is part of a series of contracts and staff & volunteer work parties taking place on the common between October and February. There will be future updates regarding these nearer the time.
