Large Pots Hand-building Workshop

4th to 5th September — 10am to 4pm

Join local ceramicist Jayne Cunliffe for a two day weekend workshop using coiling techniques to build larger pots.

Workshop suitable for those with some experience of working with clay – however, complete beginners are welcome.

Day 1 will be spent exploring this versatile hand building technique, setting out a simple design before starting to construct a large vessel from ‘coils’ (ropes of clay). Starting with hand rolled coils then moving on to using a clay extruder to speed up the process. Working at this size with this technique means moving at the speed of the clay, and the pot will need to dry a little and stiffen up overnight before you can complete your vessel.

Day 2 will allow you to complete and trim your pot, and decorate it with slip – an opportunity to explore pattern and colour, including simple sgraffito techniques. The pot is allowed to dry out and then be fired ready for you to collect a few weeks later. The pot will be fired to stoneware temperatures and will be functional.
